TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS. Written by Jules Verne and published by Porter and Coates, Philadelphia. These are early reprint editions and although undated were published between 1876 and 1880. The American publisher of the first editions of these works, James R.

Osgood, auctioned off manyat least 400 of his titles, stereotype plates, woodcuts, rights to publish, etc. In late March of 1876, so, likely, these books are likely a result of that sale. The plates used in the books are the same as those in the originals, though the number are reduced. This is a closely matching setall with earth-tone colored covers.
Porter & Coates also published The Wreck of the Franklin , but with this exception, these are the total of this publishers works by Verne. There is a 32 page illustrated List of Juvenile Works by Porter & Coates in the back of Desert of Ice. It includes all their Verne titles as well as series by C. These books have had enough restoration work to make them not only presentable, but readable and capable of being shown without worry about about them falling apart in your hands.

These books have been rebound using superior materials (strong cloth hinges and better paste) and keeping the original covers and even the endpapers where possible (see description below). The books come with mylar covers and a very sturdy new leather lined slip-cover box They should last another 100 years in the new box constructed of acid-free binding board, leather lining, sturdy cloth and wallpaper using acid free adhesives. The box is decorated with a mylar facsimile of an antique Jules Verne stamp on top and photos of the author on the sides.

9 3/8 x 6 1/2 inches. First edition hardcover with dustjacket. These books were originally in poor/fair to good condition only. All were worn, soiled covers with loss of some cloth at corners and spine ends. They were in various states of binding degradation.

However, except for 20.000 Leagues which was missing one illustration and all pages from 115 to 126, the books were complete with all pages and illustrations present. I rebound 20,000 Leagues with facsimile pages and illustrations so it is now completesee the pictures to see these pages and the illustration. The books cloth was given a mild cleaning. The spines of all books have been rebuilt using original cloth and or Japanese paper.

Fraying and worn corners were stabilized and recovered. Some design elements and gilt has been retouchedmostly on At The North Pole. All books have been rebound and recased in their original covers.

In some cases signature folds were guarded with strong paper and resewn. Every fold of The Desert of Ice had to be guarded so the spine is a little more swollen than what it had been. The original endpapers have been retained with new paper reinforcing at the hinges; except for At The North Pole which has new acid free endpapers as the originals were plain and in very poor condition. The new ones closely resemble the original ones. The books show many signs of usesmudges, some foxing, pink coloring in a few of the 20,000 Leagues illustrations, tattered page edges, etc. There were many page tearsI repaired (archivally) all the tears I could find. These books are not new and do show their age--pages are toned aged and there is some smudging and mild foxing--but they are strongly bound with good hinges. All in all the books are now in very good condition and should last a long time with wise use and moderate care.

ALL ITEMS ARE CAREFULLY AND SECURELY PACKED TO REDUCE OR ELIMINATE DANGER OF CRUSHING AND OR WATER/MOISTURE DAMAGE. PLEASE DO THE SAME FOR ME. I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE ALL OF THE BOOKS, AUTOGRAPHS AND SIGNATURES ON BOOKS I SELL.

I do not submit any of the signatures for authentication. You must return the book and its autograph to me. I carefully pad the book and wrap it in cardboard as long as it fits.
