PLANESCAPE - HELLBOUND THE BLOOD WAR. The last boxed set released for Planescape, Hellbound: The Blood War is billed as a "Deluxe Adventure & Accessory", but it is really more of a mini campaign setting, albeit one based on an event (the Blood War), rather than based in one location. The first book, The Chant of the War: A Player's Guide, is a 32-page introduction to the main battlegrounds and participants in the war, aimed at players. It's packed with colorful pictures, although the Baatezu Army enlistment poster (shown above) is perhaps a little silly.

The 80-page The Dark of the War: A DM's Guide has a higher text to picture ratio, and does a good job of covering topics useful to DMs. The participants in the war, tactics and strategies they use, weapons and some sample skirmish sites are all covered. The thickest book is War Games: An Adventure Book, at 96 pages.

It contains three medium-length adventures which can be run separately or linked together into a mini-campaign. Also in the box is a 16-page comic titled The Bargain. It is written by Jeff Grubb and illustrated by Ruppel and DiTerlizzi.

Despite the niche appeal of the product, Colin McComb and Monte Cook do a good job with it. The plots and schemes are described well, and suggest plenty of opportunities for adventure. Details about item NOTE: This set is NOT complete.

It is missing a single booklet: Visions of War. That booklet contains pictures the DM can use to show player characters at different points in the adventure as a visual aid of sorts. It is NOT necessary to actually play the game.

It just means the players will have to use their imaginations to picture characters and places rather than rely on pictures. If you feel you must have this booklet, there are sites online that offer pdf downloads of it for very modest prices e. The other item missing is a gimmick recruiting poster for the blood war. It is not needed at all to play the game. Otherwise the box set is complete. ALL the booklets are in near mint condition and look entirely unused.

In other words, they are like new. The box does have moderate shelf wear (see later 4 pictures for close ups).
