The Clan of the Cave Bear chronicles the early life of Ayla. As a young Cro-Magnon girl, Ayla's parents are killed in an earthquake at the beginning of the novel when she was just five years of age. She is rescued by Iza, the Clan's medicine woman, and she is brought into the Clan.
The Valley of Horses is the second novel in the Earth's Children series by Jean M. This novel begins where Clan of the Cave Bear ended, with Ayla alone and searching for the Others.
At the same time, the novel follows the adventures of two brothers, Jondalar and Thonolan, who are on a Journey together. The Mammoth Hunters, the third book of the Earth's Children series opens on Ayla and Jondalar joining a tribe of cro-magnons called the mamouth hunters.
They are welcomed and Ayla catches the eye of a mamouth hunter named Ranec. Because of her clan (neanderthal) upringing, Ayla believes that she has no choice and when a man shows interest in her she must submit to his will. Ranec is a good man and Ayla cares for him, but she is in love with Jondalar.
Meanwhile, a brokenhearted Jondalar believes that Ayla has lost interest and rejected him. After a long winter of misunderstandings, Jondalar decides to leave the mamouth hunters, and Ayla must decide whether she wants to stay with the mamouth hunters and marry Ranec, or leave with Jondalar.
