Item Description: The Bibliophile Society, Boston, 1903. First edition two volumes issued by the Bibliophile Society for its members. This is a scarce limited edition of this work, issued by the Bibliophile Society for its members. This is one of 467 sets on handmade paper, out of a total edition of 487. Printed on mold made paper watermarked "BIBLIOPHILE SOCIETY". Two portraits, seven facsimiles, thirty-eight maps (some folding, some double-page).
The front and rear covers have gilt borders. Edited by Henry Cabot Lodge. The title page has elaborate decorative design in seven colors and an added engraved title page.
This work contains engraved plates, and well-preserved double-page and fold-out maps. Two Engraved portraits of André in the first volume are signed in pencil by engravers E. The etching of Major Andre serving as frontispiece (illustration preceding and usually facing the title page) in the second volume title-page etching is signed by artist W. Condition / Notes: Two Volumes in Very Good to Excellent condition, with Original Box and Label.
The books show mild wear from age and use. The pages are clean and bright, and plates and maps are well-preserved.
Top edge gilt books are in very good to fine, clean, bright and tight condition, some spots and stains to the covers, and some light uneven discoloration to the spines. Still includes many of the tissues covering engravings with the interior pages, clean and bright. This set is Very Rare as it has the Original Box and Label (unattached from cloth box). Box's interior is lined with velvet and has one corner torn (See Photos). (several more photos available upon request).
More Book Publication History: Four hundred and sixty-seven copies of this work on handmade paper, and ten copies on Japanese vellum, have been printed for members. Ten additional copies have been issued complimentary to Mr. Bixby, the owner of the original manuscript, for presentation to his friends, and to historical societies. One Japanese vellum copy will be presented through Mr. Editor: Henry Cabot Lodge - Henry Cabot "Slim" Lodge (May 12, 1850 Ð November 9, 1924) was an American Republican Senator and historian from Massachusetts. He had the role (but not the title) of Senate Majority leader. He is best known for his positions on foreign policy, especially his battle with President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 over the Treaty of Versailles. Lodge demanded Congressional control of declarations of war; Wilson refused and the United States Senate never ratified the Treaty nor joined the League of Nations. Lodge received his PhD in history from Harvard. Lodge was a long-time friend and confidant of Theodore Roosevelt.
